Utah ~ 80 mile S/SE of Great Salt Lake.
There will be a full moon tonight, at exactly 2:48 am on Sunday morning. We have a moot tonight to celebrate and discuss.
The town is a growing one, we have a producing silver mine and due to this the railroad is coming and the town is spreading. The town is currently 1100-1200 people with one Sheriff and a mayor. We have two blacksmiths (each with their own shop), a schoolhouse on the southern end of the town, church, an inn, a saloon, and probably other buildings as yet not mentioned.
A supply wagon caravan came today and with it came Benjamin Constantine. He is to be the new deputy in town. He is dressed as a typical lawman from back east and seems to have a special affinity for his hat. The caravan also brought two strangers with it. The first is a smaller man wearing a black pinstripe suit and a short town style top hat. He is also wearing smoked out glasses. He is carrying a gold pocket watch, which he checks every 15 minutes. It could be more or less than 15 minutes as none of us have watches. He is also carrying a briefcase. The other man is larger and also wearing a dark suit and the same hat. He seems to be packing, but carrying nothing and is very aware of his surroundings. They head to the nicer part of town.
The sheriff, Erik Jorgensson, is sitting out on his porch with his two coon hounds looking deceptively relaxed. Benjamin approaches the sheriff to present his papers and find out where he can bunk down. The sheriff advises the Missing Moon Saloon. This turns out to be a bit of nepotism on his part as the proprietor is his sister-in-law. After advising Benjamin that he will be in church in the morning he dismisses him from duties this evening.
Benjamin decides to head to the saloon and also explore the town a bit. This to better let people admire his hat. At the Missing Moon saloon he is advised that the doors close at midnight, and if he needs to get in after to just bang on them, rooms are available from the hour to the week. He decides to bunk there for the time being. While wandering around town, he is noticed by the blacksmith.
The blacksmith, Eógan (Owen), is a large fellow. He is a very good blacksmith, except for making puzzles, and tends to receive all the complicated work as opposed to the other blacksmith who makes a lot of horseshoes. Eógan also has an apprentice, Dieter Gunterson, who is Kin with Gnosis. His apprentice is the grandson of the one who put together the war party to take over the Caern.
Richard Burnbauld III, a retired war veteran with the rank of colonel is killing time at “The Empty Bucket” Saloon. He is already a member of the sept. He is looking for either a dice or card game that can potentially end in a fight. He might miss his glory days a bit. The saloon is located near the school house, much to the school mistresses dismay but no plans to move either have come to fruition yet.
The Empty Bucket saloon has Ale a plenty, charges less for whisky, and more for dirty water. The bartender is a portly sort with a bum leg, and a chip on his shoulder regarding his location in life. The bar is occupied by roughnecks who just got off shift, and a couple of guys sleeping it off.
“Hey pappy, how about two fingers” asks Colonel.
He then sees that some of the roughnecks are starting a poker game and seem to be one chair short.
“Mind if I join”
“Your money” says roughneck one “the betting starts at $0.10 and pot limit is $1.00.”
“Sounds good, I’ll even lose the first three hands”
The game goes on for a few hands, and true to his word Colonel looses the first three. He starts playing in earnest (not cheating yet). He starts to try to talk to the other players to throw them off their game, while learning their tells. Unfortunately, the Colonel is either not as good as he thinks he is, or is having a bad day and after losing an entire pot to a bad bluff he decides it is time to head out to the Sept.
Benjamin decided to start to head over to the Caern and the Moot.
The Caern itself is located on a plateau on the top of a mountain. It is rather large. The people of the Sept have been getting it ready for the Moot tonight.
The sept is made up of 28 Garou and is a level 4/5 sept.
Some of the members of the sept are as follows:
Master of the Rite:Bridget Salmon’s-Wise-Daughter, she has taken Jane under her wing.
Master of the Challenge:Conrad Breaks-the-Back-of-the-Weak He will bet on anything but the outcome of the challenges he oversees.
Warder:Rutger Shield-Biter. He organized the war party that took over the caern, and is in charge of security of the Sept. He takes his job very seriously.
Gatekeeper:Frost-Paint. He would like to be more in contact with other Caerns. He likes being the negotiator but not being in the sept all the time.
Keeper of the Land:Egon Wood-Walker. He is actively recruiting a new keeper now because he won’t live out the winter due to a mystical deformity.
Master of the Howl:Kevron Three Voices
There is also the council of the elders and various other members of the sept.
Another member of the sept is Seeker. He has been at the sept for a fair amount of time. He does not seem to know what he is seeking, but seems to think he will know what it is when he finds it.
Jane is a newer member of the sept. She has been with the sept for about one month. Her initiation was game-craft. Jane is approximately 5’4" tall and very wiry. She has red hair and ice blue eyes. She has 4" wide scars around both wrists. In wolf form she is red. Jane often seems to be staring into space and having a conversation, or just listening.
Jane keeps re-adjusting the set up to make it more feng-shui. There is one particular rock she is concerned about being in the wrong spot.
“If it is in the wrong spot, everything will go badly”
She eventually gets sent out to patrol the Caern by Bridget. Jane leaves the center of the caern in a spiral radiating out toward the boundary edges. She opts to patrol in wolf form. Eógan arrives at the Caern as she is patrolling, as does dusk. As Jane is patrolling she hears a welcome/arriving howl (not a very good one) and responds back in kind (so as not to upstage the new arrival).
Jane starts to lead the visitor back the way she came on patrol towards the Caern, after all you always enter and leave places the same way so you have to go back in a spiral as well. After about an hour of this the visitor starts to realize it is not a direct path and decides to take matters into his own hands and head straight to the Caern. As visitors are not allowed unescorted this puts Jane in a tricky situation. If she goes straight the Caern won’t be there since she won’t be going in the same way she went out, but she can’t let the visitor go by himself. If she does the “help” call everyone will come running. Jane tries to stop the visitor to no avail so she cries for help.
Eógan gets sent out to find out what the trouble is. It really should have been the enforcers, after all it is not like she was the “wolf who cried human!” Anyway Eógan tries to get to the root of the problem, after some discussion it is decided that Jane will continue her way and because Eógan came straight, the visitor can go with him and enter that way. Jane now goes back to the point that they left the spiral and continues on her way toward the Caern, safe in the knowledge that it will be there.
While this is going on another visitor comes to the outskirts of the Caern and announces himself. His howl eventually answered, but not in as much of a friendly way. A large, cranky wolf meets this new visitor. It is established that he is passing through, does what needs to be done, can either start a fight or end one, and can do a little bit of everything.
He is told “we are not in a position to need a hyena!” by one of the wolfs meeting him. Another wolf nudges cranky in the knee.
“Wait here, right here till after the Moot and there may be something someone is looking for.”
After cranky lopes off, the other wolf circles the visitor to assess him. He is the gatekeeper and his name is Frost-Paint. He has had dreams, and after that cryptic remark tells the visitor that he will see him after the Moot.
Thus ends our first session.
